The world is walking on a tightrope. In addition to the undeniable climate change that threatens the existence of humanity on earth, there are others provoked by human beings. Such is the case of nuclear weapons that also jeopardise human life.

Since the United States dropped its atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II, the danger of nuclear war has considerably increased.

The constant pressure of the West over Iran because of their peaceful nuclear program has further driven fears of a war of this nature, also exacerbated now by the tense situation in the Middle East, where Israel, an unconditional ally of the U.S. interests, possesses such weapons.

World peace and humanity are being threatened every minute. Scientists estimate that the explosion of only one percent of the existing nuclear weapons would cause a catastrophe.

Cities would burn for weeks or even months. The explosion would create clouds of dust and smoke that would remain suspended for years.

Temperatures on Earth would drop drastically and a frozen world would emerge. This is not a motion picture, but the sad reality.

On several occasions, the top leader of the Cuban revolution, Fidel Castro, has warned of the threat looming over the planet.

Cuba expressed in Geneva that a proposal by the Non-Aligned Movement deserves to be heard and refers to the setting up of a specific timetable for the gradual reduction of nuclear weapons until their total elimination by the year 2025.

The destruction of all nuclear weapons is the only guarantee for humanity. While this weapon exists, the risk of accidents will continue to increase, as well as errors or miscalculations and the desire for nuclear weapons by those who can possess them.

Manipulation regarding the non-proliferation-- based on double standards and political interest—constitutes, therefore, a great danger.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez condemned the existence of a privileged club that continues to stockpile nuclear weapons while violating the inalienable right of other nations to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

As stated by the Cuban foreign minister, the international community must completely abandon the concept of nuclear deterrence based on untenable and unacceptable military doctrines, which puts the world on the edge of destruction.
